Info lifted from some nondescript website:

Basque = Tough

Whoever they are, wherever they came from, the Basques never ran away from a fight. They defended themselves heroically against the Phoenicians and the Greeks, the Romans and the Visigoths. The Basques claimed that they slaughtered half of Emperor Charlemagnes rear guard at the fabled battle of the Pass of Roncesvalles.

Basque Flag: The Ikurria

July 14, 1994 was the 100th anniversary of the Ikurrina, the ensign under which the Basque fighters fought the Civil War.

A Basque captained Columbus ship, the Santa Maria. And when the explorer Magellan was killed in the Phillippines, it was a Basque officer who directed the ship, the first to circle the globe.

The Moors, who conquered most of Spain and ruled for hundreds of years, were wise enough not to track the Basques into their mountain villages in the Pyrenees.

The Basques are known for their physical strength. Among their typical amusements are the competitions and challenges of superior strength such as: tug-of-war, rock lifting, rock pulling, and wood chopping. In all these competitions, betting commonly takes place. But the most common amusements of all are the ball games, and jai alai is one of the most popular.
