SING IT

Whitney Houston is singing "I will always love you" on some awards show on ABC. This really shouldn't affect me. It was featured in a Kevin Costner movie, for pete's sake.

Earlier today, I heard the Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You" playing in a Lyons' restaurant.

Eating there alone - sitting with my "Santa Fe Skillet" - The vague creeping sadness enveloped me. Memories are opaque; experience transitory.

No matter how good something is, it can't be held onto.

Whatever it is - whatever it is that brings you happiness - there will be moments when that peace and wave of warmth will cease and flutter.

Not that there's any point to giving up. Giving up and giving in when the world rips and tears at you would be counterproductive. Deterioration and disintegration will occur soon enough. Time will do that. No need to help it along.

Life is the only thing we have. And in life, there is that chance to experience love, however fleeting.

Time has no sway over love. Love cannot be broken, battered, or dissolved. It can be bruised, swept aside, or suppressed. But it remains - in the ether, in the subconscious, in the veins of every true living man and woman feeling that romantic surge, that call of history's tapestry.

We have breathed it, and others will breathe it after we are gone. And it is our love - all of us.
