othelladub's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- moderately structured narrative I was reading an entry from a friend's diary, and it referenced intensity and mediocrity in relation to art and celebrity. Celebrity and Noteriety, as far as I can discern, generally act as forms of Cancer when applied to most artisans, writers, illustrators, and the like. What's the use? I find intensity admirable in very few people. It's a human characteristic like any other. It's a rather humorous visual, imagining a person pacing through life "intensely." There have certainly been notable exceptions, intense individuals throughout history who were genuine artists, visionaries, and craftsmen. But for one to assume that intensity can be learned, or is necessary for "great art," is a faulty premise. That's probably not the premise of my friend's ideas regarding intensity, but the naivete regarding the ideas themselves comes across as, well, mediocre. ... What is art without mediocrity, anyway? 10:37 p.m. - 2002-07-10 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
