Changing Only Stays the Same

Rhett walked along the creekbed in sandals, gold, with a broken-in brow, looking ever worse for the wear. His little girl had left him - left him dry, and he wandered, wondering why.

Elaine sat in her room, drinking red wine. The shades had been drawn; the light barely crept in. Her picture of the boy with gold sandals was fading. She listened to the Pretenders on wax, stomped her feet lightly (so as to kill the "sleepiness"), and rubbed below her knees, closing her eyes.

A sparrow flew about, gliding and fluttering, reaching no destination - always searching. It landed on the porch of an elderly gentleman in Sacramento. It flew away, leaving only an old man and his aching feet.

The wind blew. The rain started. The night sky looked as if all of human history was ready for a cry.
